Ive always been into 90s films and most of the 90s film that I enjoy were Urban movies like Friday and House Party (will rewatch and review the franchise sometime). I love the urban, African American Comedies and the humor involved in the movies. Watching a review on Youtube inspired me to watch all of the Friday films and review them. This review is dedicated to that franchise and all three films will be reviewed.
NOTE: Keep in mind, that these reviews were written back when I started so they are much shorter and the paragrpah measurement is nowhere near today's reviews. I do not plan to rewrite the reviews to keep my original thoughts in place.
Friday: (1995)
Rating: 3 and a half/4 stars
F. Gary Gray has made a sweet touching hood film if that makes any sense. A comedy-drama take on the life of two jobless African Americans who basically sit on the porch all day and talk aimlessly about life. My kinda movie.
The film is about Craig Jones (Ice Cube) a crabby jobless "two cool for school" type kid and his drug-dealing best friend Smokey (Chris Tucker) sit on the porch all day, thinking it will be an easy day in the hood. When really it will be a life or death type day.
The neighborhood bully Debo (Tom Lister, Jr.) harasses them and says they have to pay him $200 by nightfall or they "will not live to see Saturday."
Friday is a sweet movie, it his hilarious in most parts. And is loaded with dialogue. Its the kinda movie you watch and chill out too. The dialogue is actually pretty well written. Ice Cube and DJ Pooh provided a script. From two small names in the film industry at the time, they didnt do bad.
I too like the sequels of Friday, and find them true to the original. Mainly "Friday After Next" is my favorite of the franchise. I hope F. Gary Gray and Chris Tucker return to do one last Friday. Maybe this time they will move on to Saturday.
Starring: Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Tommy Lister Jr., Nia Long, Bernie Mac, and John Witherspoon. Directed by: F. Gary Gray.
*MY FIRST OFFICIAL REVIEW: ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON OCTOBER 13, 2009.
Next Friday: (2000).
Craig (Ice Cube) and Dey Dey (Mike Epps) look around the neighborhood in "Next Friday".
Rating: 3/4 stars.
Next Friday is the follow up to successful cult film, Friday. Which seems like an urban sequel to Booty Call more than Friday. This one takes place exactly a week after Friday did.
Next Friday is about Craig Jones (Ice Cube) who reprises his role as Craig, goes to live with his uncle in Cucamonga after the neighborhood bully he beat up escapes from prison. Chris Tucker's character Smokey is said to go to rehab. Mike Epps takes the role of the supporting character, Day-Day, Craig's cousin. Day Day is basically the "hood" kinda guy, also denying he's the father of his girlfriend's child. His girlfriend takes many stands trying to beat him up, using her sister Baby D.
Meanwhile, the neighborhood bully, Debo, from the first Friday, Escapes from jail trying to hunt down Craig while sneaking in the back of Craig's dads truck. Which they tricked him in driving down to Cucamonga saying Craig was hurt.
In the line of "Good Sequels" and "Bad Sequels", this has it's moment, but its nothing compared to classic "Friday." This one tries to have a lot of memoirs to the first movie, which it does, but many are forgettable. Still a decent sequel, I recommend Next Friday, but see the old Friday before this or you will be lost.
Starring: Ice Cube, Mike Epps, and John Witherspoon. Directed by: Steve Carr.
Friday After Next: (2002).
Mr. Jones (John Witherspoon) and Uncle Elroy (Don "D.C." Curry) advertise there restaurant "Bros. BBQ" in Friday After Next.
Rating: 3 and a half/4 stars
Besides the butchered title and the various negative reviews, "Friday After Next" is actually the funniest film in the "Friday" franchise. It's quirkiness, silliness, and very nice setting works with the movie in a good way.
Craig Jones (Ice Cube) and his cousin Day-Day (Mike Epps) return, this time living at their own home. After being robbed by a Santa Claus dressed character, who steals all their money. They need to pay their cranky landlady or they will be beat up by the homosexual neighbor.
They get job as security guards in a strip mall were Craig's father, Mr. Jones (John Witherspoon) and Day-Day's dad, Uncle Elroy (Don "D.C." Curry) work. Stores like "Holy Moly Donuts", "Bros. BBQ", and "Pimps and Hos" (ran by Kat Williams) make up the strip.
The movie isn't bad as people say it is. The deleted ending is very touching, and some of the chase scenes are fun to watch. Some of the scenes were not needed, but you can tell why they kept them. This is definitely the best of the franchise. I just hope that they use a better title for the possible fourth one. At worst it will be "Friday After Next After Next and the First." Or just called it something simple like "Last Friday" or "Saturday" and leave it at that.
Starring: Ice Cube, Mike Epps, John Witherspoon, Don "D.C." Curry, and Kat Williams. Directed by Marcus Raboy.
