Now that Harold Camping's prediction for the end of the world as come and gone without incident, it is time to refocus on the more popular theory: December 21st, 2012 (the end date of the Mayan Long Count Calendar and the winter solstice for that year).
By now, we should have all heard about it, especially due to that hokey movie, it is where the ancient Long Count Calendar of the Maya will complete its 5,125 year cycle. It will mark the end of this age and the beginning of a new age, but Western society has unfortunately interpreted the Long Count Calendar to mean the end of the world.
Whereas Y2K in the 90's was mainly seen as an event where every computer in the world would fail and cause a lot of nuclear bombs and power plants to go off, 2012 has a variety of theories. These theories include a pole shift (Earth Crust Displacement), Planet X (Nibiru), a super coronal mass ejection, a comet/asteroid, Betelguise going supernova, an alien invasion, World War III, etc. As you can tell, a lot of these so called "doomsday theories" are just bogus, but that hasn't stopped people from cashing in on it. The apocalypse industry is a business where there is money to be made like any other, and there is no end in sight.
We are seeing the production of countless books, documentaries, videos, blogs, websites, etc., that are concerning different takes on 2012, with supposed backing as to why that particular "take" is the correct one. As a result, the 2012 Phenomenon is bigger than Y2K or any other doomsday movement before it. Much like how the Beatles were "bigger than Jesus" during their time, but that is no longer so thanks to today's technology and wide-range communicative networking. Of course, that is also another reason as to how and why 2012 has been gaining so much notoriety.
Here is one video I found to be pretty fascinating, though I mainly like it for how the song fits the content perfectly and how it can be used to scare naughty children into being good children:

So what do you think will happen?
I honestly do not know what will happen, but I believe it will most likely be a non-event like each and every single past doomsday prediction in history. I have seen several different end of the world predictions in my lifetime (1988, Y2K, 6/6/06, May 21st 2011) and none of them came to pass. Heck, we even have Penn & Teller and their Showtime series to thank for showing us just how bogus these apocalyptic claims are (even if their episode was quite biased).
Of course, if anything does happen, I would like it to be some sort of spiritual event, like a rise in our consciousness. Or at the very least, have humankind be locked on the path of getting much smarter/more enlightened, so that Idiocracy doesn't become a reality.
Then again, a small sick part of me would actually like to see the world end. Mainly because I would like to have the people who have wronged me and those close to me be annihilated as they deserve to be. I have had to endure a lot of abuse and trauma throughout my life, and if that is suppose to be a part of the human experience, then I say "to hell with it!"
But in conclusion, I remain undecided as to what will happen, but lean towards it being a non-event.
