Here is my review of Sherlock Holmes:
On Saturday, January 2nd, I went to go see the new Guy Ritchie flick Sherlock Holmes at the Lake Twin Cinema. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson. The story is based on the writings of Arthur Conan Doyle and as such it is set in Victorian Era England.
The film starts out with Sherlock Holmes and John Watson cracking down upon an occultic sacrifice ritual being carried out by the Lord Henry Blackwood. They are successful of putting a stop to the sacrifice and have Scotland Yard arrest Blackwood on multiple charges of murder. Blackwood is put to death, but then strange occurrances start happening that somehow have a tie to Blackwood.
The movie then follows Holmes & Watson trying to unravel the mystery behind these occurances, which leads Holmes to suspect that they are pieces to a bigger and more unnerving plot. There are quite few interesting twists and turns as the mystery pieced together with every clue our hero uncovers. The film keeps you think of what the treacherous plot could be, who is behind it, and why it is being done.
As much as this film is a mystery, is it also an action flick. There is a lot of exciting and thrilling scenes throughout the film. A couple of scenes I really liked was when Holmes thought out how he would take out an opponent in slow motion, and then the film would show him making his move in regular motion. I thought that was a pretty cool concept in the film.
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law do a great job at portraying their characters. The rest of the cast did good for the most part, even though some of the actors were just okay. While Sherlock Holmes will be good note for Downey Jr.'s career, I will always think of him as Iron Man. (Looking forward to Iron Man 2!)
However, to purists of Conan Doyle's works, bewary when seeing this film. They changed quite a few things about the character of Holmes and the story, such as one scene with him in a fighting ring. Not to mention that the film makes a lot of allusions to other works then purely deriving from the original Sherlock Holmes stories. Regardless, that didn't keep me from enjoying this movie, and I am sure that I still would have liked it even if I were a Conan Doyle fan.
So overall, it is a good fun and witty flick to see for this Winter season. With it's interesting characters, intriging mystery, thrilling story, action sequences, and little bits of comedy it makes for a really entertaining flick. Especially since we don't get too many detective movies nowadays.
