It was the first episode of the new KISS FM morning show Brotha Fred's Neighborhood. The show replaces the iconic DreX in the Morning which was cancelled on December 14, 2010 when Kevin "DreX" Buchar was unexpectedly fired from Clear Channel Management. The original show featured him Mel "Mel-T" Tovar (who quit upon DreX's exit), Angi Taylor, and Tommy Black at the time of it's cancellation. The new show features Christopher "Brotha Fred" Frederick, David "David L" Livingston, Angi Taylor (of DreX) and Tommy Black (of Drex).
I kept and open mind, and gave it a whirl. I needed something to listen to. It wasn't that great. I wouldn't fire a seven year radio veteran for Brotha Fred. He wasn't a bad guy by any means, in fact, he's between a rock and a hard place trying to match the level of humor brought to us by DreX and the rest of the morning crew. I did laugh a few times when they were letting people call in to rant and rave about Green Bay.
Also, I know they're required to play music. DreX was never silent, it had some music here and there (ie: The Drextacular Jam of the Day, Drex's Funky Funkified Jam of the Day, and The Drextacular Five). But it was RIDICULOUS how much music they played. I swear it was a fifteen track mixtape on a loop the whole show. DreX was built around talking, and this guy would talk for like 2-6 minutes, just to continue with music. I said to my self "maybe at seven they'll stop...Eight? Hopefully nine?"
The show is all around bland and nothing special. Whenever I read the words "DreX out at KISS FM" or "DreX let go from Clear Channel" my heart falls. He was a radio legend. A legend that can't be replaced by Brotha Fred. I'll continue to listen, but as soon as DreX and/or Mel comeback I'm switching immediately.
