Overall event rating: ★★★
I was very pleased at how much I got accomplished during Spring Break film wise. I planned to only watch ten films from the period of March 25 to April 3. But by the second day of Spring Break, having a lot more time on my hands, I knew that I would probably watch way more than expected.
The People I've Slept With.
The end result was seventeen films watching in a little over a week period. Most of the films I saw were good, but some I saw were weak. I'm prepared to give a brief overview of the most memorable of the crop. At the end I'll site which was the best and worst thing I watched during this massacre.
Green Day: Awesome as F**k.
Black Swan: Having missed Black Swan in the theaters I felt I was obligated to watch it. Being an aspiring critic I will need to have knowledge of Academy Award winning films. It's not like this film was a total turn off. Portman and Kunis were in the film and loving both those females for their acting skills and looks I was really intrigued at how this would be pulled off. Black Swan was a highpoint in the Spring Break Massacre, but it's a love it or hate it film. Not for everyone.
Maximum Overdrive.
Battle: Lost Angeles: Don't forget the colon. I'm not a huge sci-fi/action film fanatic, but there are some "end of the world" films I'm known to like. Battle: LA is not one of them. This is an overly loud, annoying jumble of one explosion after another and weak character development. I saw this with a friend and he loved the whole movie. I was about ready to leave around forty five minutes in. He brought up a good point saying "To an average movie goer it's awesome." I said "Well the average movie goer doesn't look for a good movie. Throw in a few explosions and special effects and it's their favorite film." Most illogical.
Encino Man: This is the second to last Pauly Shore film I've seen. Son in Law is the only one I have left. What can be said about Pauly? He is a goof off, slacker, joker, prankster, goofball, dorky, nerdy, funny, and silly actor of the nineties. He's my humor. Encino Man is better than both In the Army Now and Jury Duty, but it still isn't on par with Bio-Dome. That film is a comedy classic in my book.
Couples Retreat.
Showgirls: As part of April Fools Day I thought I'd watch a film that wasn't meant for me. Turns out the movie had the reputation of a joke as well. Showgirls is not bad, but it isn't great. It has a good cast, a sexy storyline, but is two steps away from being a classy pornographic film. Elizabeth Berkly, as I said, was great as Nomi and I enjoyed seeing Kyle MacLaughlin on screen again. Overall, Showgirls wasn't that bad, but it wasn't great.
And now for the best of the best and the worst of the worst.
Silver Streak: Without a doubt, Silver Streak was the most fun I've had during the Spring Break Massacre. Fast paced action equipped with entertaining dialog from one of the funniest comedic duos of all time; Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. This was sadly the last film I needed to see with them to say I've seen everything they did together. In a way I didn't want it to end. I wanted the fun to continue. I saved the best for last.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules: Seeing the sequel to Diary of a Wimpy Kid in the theaters made me realize two things (1) I'm growing up and (2) the films are getting a tiny bit more mature. Maybe I'm getting too old for this series. Big deal. I still watch Arthur, Clifford, Hey Arnold, Rugrats, and other children shows on TV religiously. So maybe that isn't the problem. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules isn't as loathsome as the first film, but it still sucks. The jokes are still childish, the humor is almost non-existent, and the immaturity is back. Full force. I started the Spring Break Massacre on the wrong foot for damn sure.
Couples Retreat.
Over the course of Spring Break I encountered horror films, satires, lame kids films, screwball comedies, a classy NC-17 film, slapstick farces, ass kicking killers, no shame women, a runaway train, dopey couples, and more. It was an eventful Spring Break to say the least. The films I watched were fun for the most part, but some definitely tested my patience. Hopefully what I have planned for summer won't be like that.
