AND...Both are fucking hilarious stand up albums. Patton is a mater storytelling and the payoffs are great. He's an amazing nerd with a healthy amount of cynicism, but there's enough surreal stuff to keep it fun. Top Bits: Text, Orgy, Grocery Robots, The Magician, The Miracle of Childbirth, The Dukes of Hazard, Physics For Poets, At Midnight I Kill George Lucas With a Shovel, and Wackity Schmackity Doo

Heart - Dreamboat Annie Holy crap this album is amazing. Besides the iconic "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You", there's a lot to love in this soft rock masterpiece. The Dreamboat Annie trilogy is the highlight. The first bit, while the shortest, is my favorite and leads into Crazy on You in a great way. Ann has such a beautiful voice and Nancy is a genius with the guitar. Top tracks: Magic Man, Crazy on You, Dreamboat Annie (Fantasy Child), Dreamboat Annie, Sing Child, White Lightning & Wine, How Deep it Goes

I like Heart. (That's... all I have to say about that. I don't make a habit of listening to albums from the 70's and such but I still think the band is pretty good overall.)

I'm playing Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I've been away from rap for a LONG time, so I'm not sure how to judge it. I'm up to "So Appalled" right now. I do know that most of the songs go on and on and on forever and only 3 of the songs have convinced me that this album is worthy of any of the hype. "Monster," "POWER," and "All of the Lights."
I hate to be so cynical. But, this is my honest reaction. Another of my serious problems is that the choruses repeat so many times for no real reasons.
Okay, now I'm on "Lost in the World" and so far, this is my vote for best song right after "All of the Lights." "Runaway" was close to being amazing but halfway through it stops and just makes a lot of noise. I mean, I know I heard some classical music instruments. But other than that, you could barely hear any singing. Then you couldn't hear any. "Blame Game" was also annoyingly repetitive and endless. "One Hell of a Life" pissed me off A LOT!
I just don't get this album.

But other than that, you could barely hear any singing. Then you couldn't hear any. "Blame Game" was also annoyingly repetitive and endless. "One Hell of a Life" pissed me off A LOT! I just don't get this album. There were three things preventing MBDTF from being my favorite album last year. Their names are LCD Soundsystem, The Black Keys, and Arcade Fire. I almost wanted to give it my #1 spot just because of the vast improvement in quality for Kanye. He went from borderline plagiarist and public asshole to audacious, creative, and private asshole. I trouble to call Fantasy "rap." It's more pop/hip-hop than anything else. The instrumental use is heavy, to the point where you'd not want to see the songs live because you know they wouldn't be as good. A fragile ruse. Above all else, Kanye goes for it here. He does 9 minute songs featuring several rappers working today, just because. It's a Black Eyed Peas level of insanity, but it actually worse and does not have any adverse effects on your IQ. You named three of the best tracks on the album, with other favorites of mine being Runaway and Dark Fantasy. Music is hard to argue about just because different people can hear the same thing and call it different things. Basically, Fantasy is ambitious as hell, like all of Kanye's other endeavors, but feels way more cohesive, original, and crafted than anything else he's done. Some critic called it the "Sgt. Peppers" of hip-hop. I assume he meant that it was the pinnacle of the genre thus far; it's all downhill from here, and it's been nothing but buildup to here. I agree, but I look at it in the sense that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is an album with a very long name, silly cover, that contains the most artsy content the genre has seen yet. Speaking of rap, I've been listening to a lot of it lately. Mostly revisiting the favorites, with the exclusion of Childish Gambino's new album, Camp. It's his first full on album, not something he tossed together and posted for free. It certainly feels like a coming out party for him. His previous stuff has had moments of brilliance, and all of it comes together here. The rapid fire wit of Freaks and Geeks comes back with Bonfire, the album's best song. Other songs touch on his childhood and lovelife, all maintaining the wordplay the puts Gambino among the best rappers working today.

Man- I have no idea what you just said. Except that maybe calling it "pop/hip-hop" sorta explained the ridiculous repeats of choruses. Did I think it was insane? No. I thought it was boring. Repetitive and just damn boring. And I could... somehow imagine the album being ambitious but I listened to it as best I could and heard (again in the case of the last 3rd of "Runaway" in particular) just noise. I started reading a couple reviews of the album after finishing it and they mentioned how good the production was. If that means unorthodox- I can see that. But it seemed like every track had a good sound that just went on and on and on and on (that to me is not explained by calling it "insanity") with nothing about them to make me appreciate that I was listening to it. I will admit that, when I said that I've spent such a long time away from rap, I didn't pay close attention to the lyrics. I wait to do that until I care about the rappers themselves. Which of course is why I said I liked "Monster" so much. I do. Thanks to the verses by Nicki Minaj and Jay-Z in particular, the song actually had some personality. I don't think Kanye has any. The sampling on the first 3 tracks became annoying as hell to me, as well. I think he picked them well but they were just repetitive and didn't ascend for me. Except for "POWER," which is the best mix of these qualities. Somewhere at 2:45 in the song, I started appreciating what he was doing. Even though I still don't think he's a great rapper. The reviews I read mentioned (between the two of them) that he was a producer for the longest time. Well... on that, I can certainly say that they can't all be Missy Elliot; can they?

Man- I have no idea what you just said. My reaction to every one of your posts. I finished El Camino by the Black Keys. It wasn't wildly different from any of their other works, maybe more akin to their earlier blues stuff than the rock on Brothers, but it was satisfying in every way to listen to. Like when you've been standing for awhile and finally get to sit down. It's got the powerful drums and calming vocals that can melt stress away. The Black Keys don't have much, but they use everything they have to make amazing music.
