Scarlett Johansson and Thora Birch. Rating: ★★★½ Ghost World is smart, quirky, original, witty, true, and honest in its storytelling. It has a presence to it that is better than any "be yourself" talk you could have with your parents. It finds an original, and fitting solution to one's problem whether trying to fit in with the crowd. If someone is not in a clique, their first instinct is to try and get in the clique. Ghost World is so much smarter than that, and deserves way more recognition for accomplishing that than just become another "forgotten art film." When watching Ghost World, it feels identical to the MTV show Daria. Johansson's character resembles the title character with her long hair, apparel, and dressing style. Birch's character has an even more striking resemblance to Daria's best-friend/sidekick on the show, Jane. They both have the same hair, style, and facial structure. It's almost as if Ghost World is the Daria movie with Jane as the main character. This adds more to the reason I found it enjoyable. The plot: Enid and Rebecca (Birch and Johansson) are two high school friends and outcasts, and they are perfectly fine with it. They don't care what people think of them, and they have matured a lot quicker than any of them. Enid and Rebecca graduate high school, and after playing a joke on a lonely bachelor named Seymour (Buscemi). Enid and Seymour begin to talk, and become friends seeing as they both understand each other's problems and struggles in life. This leads to dismay among Rebecca, as her and Enid begin to drift away. Enid and Rebecca don't feel they need to adapt to the lesser end of society, and be among useless things like social cliques, or popularity lists. What's most valuable - a high school title or something to show you have skills? No point does Ghost World feel the need to modernize its characters. They, and I, myself, like them the way there are. Not to mention, the storyline is different from pretty much every coming of age story I've ever seen. Sometimes the people you find solace in life with are people are "losers," but at the same time winners. I think that is one of the many morals Ghost World wants to achieve, and it does. The characters are some of the most natural and most likable in any film that I've seen recently. They don't feel like paid actors, but just regular people not knowing they are being recorded. Sort of like Clerks, where its "actors" don't seem like actors, but regular human beings. I applaud any film, regardless of standing at a good or bad level, if it can make its actors seem like truly real people. That I have the upmost respect for. Ghost World was based on a graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, and it's more powerful than any superhero film can ever dream to be. Starring: Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, and Steve Buscemi. Directed by: Terry Zwigoff.

Fantastic film. Glad you saw it.
"Sort of like Clerks, where its "actors" don't seem like actors, but regular human beings"
That said, the acting in Ghost World is MUCH better than the "acting" in Clerks.

To be fair, one of the films needs acting and the other one doesn't.

That said, the acting in Ghost World is MUCH better than the "acting" in Clerks. The acting in Clerks was natural and believable. Both films showcased very top-notch acting skills, even with the main character not being very well-known at that point.

Looks like you need a new pic. I'll have one up before the end of today. Every pic I see is unsatisfying, corrupt, or doesn't transfer to the board. I appreciate your help.

Both films showcased very top-notch acting skills, even with the main character not being very well-known at that point. Thora Birch had a major role in American Beauty, only 2 years after Ghost World. Steve Buscemi was in The Big Lebowski and Fargo a few years before Ghost World. Coming from someone who really likes Clerks, the acting is absolutely terrible in it. The acting in Ghost World is extremely good.

Birch still wasn't extremely well known, but both this and American Beauty were her breakout roles. And the acting in Clerks, coming from someone who really loves it, the acting is believable, natural, and carried fine throughout the movie.

I didn't think the acting was believable. Especially from Randall.

American Beauty came out 3 (not 2, fuck math) years before Ghost World. How can it be her breakout role, which it was, and still make her qualify for unknown actress? American Beauty was a big hit commercially, especially for an indie film, and it won Best Picture. She wasn't the main character by any means, that's clearly Kevin Spacey. But she was a major role in the film and that's likely how she got the job for Ghost World. Clerks was a cast of cheap "actors" who were mainly just friends of Kevin Smith looking to do a friend a favor. None of them did a particularly good job and thus none of them had careers outside of the Smith-a-verse. Clerks is a film about the words on the page, not the people saying them.
