Last night, I received the dreaded news that my opa/grandfather, Gunter, had died from a combination of ailments at the age of 92. He had been suffering throughout the summer from internal infections to a type IV bedsore. I am pleased that I got to see him one more time alive at the nursing center yesterday, hours just before he died. Even if he is no longer suffering, I do wish he would still be among us.
Today, my family had him cremated, much to my surprise since I imagine he would have been buried traditionally. But in this way, my oma can keep him closer to her, even if he has passed. Though, I would hope to maybe, just maybe, spread his ashes about in Germany (his homecountry); I'm sure he would have liked that idea.
Seriously, with Tiger having died and now Opa, this is not turning out to be my year. Though, I still have faith that there will be some good coming out of this year. I just have to have faith is all.
That is all I have to say for now, but I will post a formal eulogy for him on here later on. For now, I leave you with this photo and this Johnny Cash song dedicated to his memory.
Rest in peace, Opa!

Update: Here is the eulogy that I have written and dedicated to his memory:
Heinze Gunter Schneider, better known as Opa, lived a long 92-year life filled with trials and tribulations; as well as simple pleasures. He endured many hardships, to which overcame and soldiered on through having faith, determination, and the support of his family. Such things kept him going strong, even up to the very end. They were very important to him, as was the need to have a commitment in life. When he had a job to do, he took pride in getting it done, and would often, if not always, refrain from ever complaining about it. This is a lesson he passed on to his son, my father, who in turn passed it on to me. Because of Opa’s example, my father has had a very successful contractor career and I have been lauded at my job for my efforts. That is how I will always remember him; he will live on in our determination and commitment to the things we strive for most in life.
