Rating 3/4 stars.
I was literally confused about this movie. I had no idea what to expect. Ive heard some say, it was judged as a Comedy, but really a heartfelt Drama with comedic elements (much like another movie of this year, Adventureland.) In addition, some said it's a laugh out loud joke filled movie. I classify it as a "Comedy-Drama". I would have rather had it been a straight forward Drama much like Adventureland. But it seems that seeing Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, in a Drama film together may have left dry tastes in fan's mouths.
This movie is Comedy, Drama, love, heartbreak, joy, suspense, fear, hate, and tears all combined into one. Some may not find all of that in a Sandler movie, but if you dig this one in depth, you will likely find it. I should also mention that Sandler and Rogen play a great duo together and should plan future projects side by side.
George Simmons (Sandler) is a sucessfull actor and comedian. He is very down-to-earth and very hard to get along with. He is almost self absorbed in his own world and at times gets frustrated when people try to help him. He performs frequently at various Comedy Clubs or just clubs in general. He gets a report form his doctor that he has come in contact with a very rare form of leukemia called acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Treatments of chemotherapy and other benefits would most likely not treat the rare illness. In a result, he decides to keep it to himself and not tell anyone.
He runs into Ira Wright (Rogen) at one of his comeback gigs. George hires Wright to right jokes for him as well as perform at the same clubs he does. Ira begins to rise to the top as well as George makes a comeback. When George tells Ira about his sickness, Ira tries to make George come out about his illness and say theres still hope left. When performing in San Francisco, George finds his lost love Laura (Leslie Mann).
The movie is one of the best things to come out of Sandler in years. Last thing worth seeing was Happy Gilmore, and that still wasnt perfection. Seth Rogen on the other hand has done movies I have really liked. Superbad was funny, though Observe and Report was good, it lacked in parts. Lesilie Mann is another actress who doesnt disappoint.
Overall, Judd Apatow has given Funny People the same attention he gave to great films like Superbad and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Apatow films seem to get more mature as the timeline with different characters seems to progress. I hope we see an anthology of all the character's future in one future movie. I know sequels to Superbad and Forgetting Sarah Marshall are in talks, but I dont think sequels for this and Walk Hard will happen seeing as the story is pretty much complete. One can hope I guess.
Starring: Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and Leslie Mann. Directed by: Judd Apatow.
