So, we can pick them from TV and games if we want?
1.
Sigourney Weaver (you knew this was coming if you know what a freak I was for
Ghostbusters as a kid) - sophisticated, obscenely sexual, erotic (and exotic) features. A shockingly European-looking American. And... Possession Goddess. Forget Linda Blair, Weaver's "there is no Dana, only Zhoul" blows her right out of the water! She wears sleaze-cheese clothing, mystic makeup, and growls like an animal so everyone knows she ain't no
Working Girl. And speaking-of... another great example of her Subtle-Bitch Queen routine. Jealous (which is fun to watch onscreen, done by the right person) that hunky Harrison Ford wants Melanie Griffith instead of her, she humiliates Melanie in front of the entire senior / executive floor of her office building. Then... like I even need to say it, she is already known as the #1 action ass-kicker in
Aliens before there was a
Tomb Raider and was a tough leader in the epic horror film
Alien. Which she did even though Hollywood often disrespects the horror genre. Then, let's not forget she is the
signature live-action Snow White adaptation evil witch.
2.
Anjelica Huston - another ultra-sophisticated actress who has been known to play a few dark roles. Both in comedy and drama. Her
Grand High Witch is of course, without a doubt, the most stylish and fashionable Witch in modern cinema and those purple eyes... cool and creepy at the same time. It takes a serious woman to be able to pull that off. She also has a strong voice and did the accent incredibly, you can't tell it's her behind the ghastly monster face. Then... Everyone talks about how
she was born to play the Morticia Addams of the 90's. She's an incredible actress and an unbelievable beauty - immortal among both human beings and style icons alike.
3.
Alicia Silverstone - the Teen Princess icon of my generation. Insanely beautiful, with underrated acting talent, a pop culture sensation. A model with an actual look that could kill. Her powerful eyes and reckless party-girl from the Aerosmith music videos lead her to graduate into film with an epic trio of trashy erotic thrillers-
The Crush,
The Babysitter, and
True Crime. In a way, she was the Lady Gaga of the 90's because, she was an obsession of many before she even had her defining pop culture moment; 1995's stellar romantic feel-good half-satire,
Clueless. Though a notorious contract with Columbia Pictures and a controversial role in
Batman & Robin killed her commercial viability, she still lit up the screen in 1999's underrated
Blast from the Past and remains on the cutting edge today doing parodies for FunnyorDie.com and with Alanis Morissette.
4.
Daria - fictional character? Yes. But she was also the often unheard or unappreciated voice for an entire generation of disenfranchised youth tired of the mainstream, questioning the status quo, not concerned with their popularity, and seeking to be free of hypocrisy and in-charge of their own identity. Labeled (aka- written off) as a "goth girl," "brain," or "misery chick" (and not just by characters on the show), as she says in the last episode of the first season- "I'm not miserable! I'm just: not like them." And, mistaken for being depressed, she says in the first episode, "I don't have low self-esteem, it's a mistake... I have low esteem for everyone else."
Roseanne's Darlene may have planted the smart-girl seed for young women who defied conventions... but Daria fully embodied the ideal.
5.
Kathy Griffin - the single important comedian of the new millennium. Now, that might sound like no special achievement (since the quality of comedy this decade is seriously lacking, both in stand-up and in film and television) but she has actually carved a historical place for herself among comedy stars. Her rise to fame with her Bravo television specials, DVD's, and Emmy-award winning series
My Life on the D-List has elevated her to B-List celebrity status. She upgraded herself 2 letters in Hollywood / American fame. That's no easy task, even in this decade. This is especially difficult considering she isn't a model or a sex symbol, she's a redhead (which is so unique, she was literally the only celebrity since Debra Messing rose to notability in the 90's), and she's very forthright about her social and political opinions. Though she has told Jesus to "suck it," caused trouble on ABC's
The View, and criticized the Bush Administration on
Anderson Cooper, she is mostly considered an American Sweetheart. A great success story, despite her personal setbacks (death of her father, her ex-husband stealing from her). She is the only name in Celebrity-Story comedy and her long tales of Ryan Seacrest, Sharon Stone, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Dr. Phil, Clay Aiken, and Rosie O'Donnell (to name a few) will always slay crowds who appreciate a funny girl.
