Rating: 3½/4 stars.
Corey Haim's movies are hit or miss solo or with partner Corey Feldman. This one, hits it right on the money and has to be his best work subtracting Feldman from the picture. After watching Busted which I got out of the $5 dollar bin at Wal-Mart with it's edited cover made by Echo Bridge, and having Dream a Little Dream 2 that was purchased from there as well with it's edited cover and by Echo Bridge. I skipped Dream 2 and waited to get Dream 1 and went directly to a forgotten TV movie from 1993 that starred Corey Haim and his former girlfriend Nicole Eggert. While being a rare DVD and an unknown movie, it's still worth the price I paid ($30.00) and if Haim didnt die I could pretty much see a special edition coming with more features and a commentary.
But for what it was, Chris Calder (Haim) is an aspiring musician who is constantly bullied by a teen named Kurt. When moving to a new high school, he makes one friend named Dan and is the loner of the school. After his dad teaches him to man up and fight, Chris feels the only way he cant pass a bully is to dress like a girl and walk into school, and change in a bathroom. After the success of avoiding the bully, the plan becomes more than a one day thing and is now an all day everyday thing, only known by his sister, Julie. He makes friends with the girl of his dreams, Marie (Eggert) and connects with her to see what she likes. But after the bully falls for her (him) and it's revealed that the bully is Marie's sister. Things get out of hand and he wonders how long he can keep this stunt up.
One recurring thing I find myself doing during Comedy movies like License to Drive, Clerks, Black Sheep, this one, and others is squirm when the lead is in hot water. I start to get antsy and really say "yep, I could see myself in that" or "thats totally me". I dont know if others do that, but its something Ive done for a while.
This movie is all heart and seems like a traditional love story, but when its not. The ending (not to spoil) is more of an open for anything kind of ending. It leaves the conclusion for the audience to decide what direction you think happened. Not to spoil once more, but it doesnt end with Corey Haim and Nicole Eggert kissing. I'm not entirely sure if they were dating during this movie, but if they were, a lot of that was probably done behind the scenes.
This doesnt have the absolute fun License to Drive had, but it's a million times better than Busted and from what I hear, way better than Dream a Little Dream 2. Ill watch Dream and Dream 2 at one point as well as National Lampoon's Last Resort, Demolition University, Snowboard Academy, Lucas, and Blown Away (most likely all in near future). What can I say? Im a sucker for dynamic duo films and their solo work. Corey Haim and Corey Feldman are my prey.
Starring: Corey Haim, Nicole Eggert, Cameron Bancroft, and Johannah Newmarch. Directed by: Michael Keusch.
