Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are far from the heroes. They're the other guys.
Rating: ★★★
From what I have heard over the months, Kevin Smith's take on the buddy cop genre in Cop Out was atrocious and considered his worst film. Having not seen this yet, but planning to in the future I have no right to judge it at this time. I can say though, that it doesnt look like his best movie, and thats all Im saying. The Other Guys has it all. No slapstick, all jokes get at least a laugh out of me, its a good Comedy, though it doesnt beat the first Beverly Hills Cop movie, it sure is the better of the years. While flaws exsist here and there, it's funny and the energetic duo of Ferrell and Wahlberg make the film.
Im not fond of Will Ferrell and his work, few movies he's done have impressed me, but this one, with a supporting actor like Mark Wahlberg fits him. While Ferrell wasnt horrible in this, I felt Wahlberg was doing the funny bits for him. If anything, Wahlberg deserves more recognition. The thing about Ferrell is he tries to hard to be funny which kills him in a lot of movies. Anchorman was good, he failed to impress in The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, and I must be the only person who finds Elf less than amusing. In this movie he'll go down as a decent performance to me, but Wahlberg is the funny one.
The story consists of two cops Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) and Danson (Dwayne Johnson) who are the town heroes. Their cocky, they over exaggerate, and their idolized by the state of New York. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are Detectives Allen Gamble and Terry Hoitz who are "the other guys". They are resistant to working on the streets and take their line of duty on the computer doing paperwork. Mainly Allen who refuses to leave his work station. After a freak accident, Allen and Terry decide the city is in need for new cop heroes. When they take the step up, the whole town goes down and their hopes of becoming grade A police men result in disaster when trying to solve their first real crime.
When I was watching this, I didnt pay any attention to what they were trying to solve. I went around with the ride led by Ferrell and Wahlberg. The fun almost never ceased. Jokes kept coming and coming and this shockingly reminded me of Dinner for Schmucks because Ferrell was acting a lot like Carell's character in that movie. The same annoying, reluctant, overbearing personality like guy.
One thing I hope they do with this is do what they did to Get Smart. When Get Smart came out, not too long after, the creators did a movie called Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control which was parallel to Get Smart so while this was happening, they showed what Bruce and Lloyd were doing and sometimes they would cross paths. I always thought that was a unique and interesting idea. I want them to do one before all this happened where we see Samuel L and The Rock go around NYC and kick some ass. Show Ferrell and Wahlberg once in a while, but make Jackson and The Rock the prime focus, becuase I thought they were very cool. Thats the whol point really is that even know guys like those are cool, they wanted to shake it up and show the other guys which worked in favor. Interesting concept, high recomendation.
