I've still yet to see a lot of Kubrick's work. As a matter of fact, I've only seen 2 of his films. And one of them, I didn't finish.
I do want to see Lolita and Spartacus a lot. But I hear there's an unrated / uncut Director's Cut of the latter, so tracking that down and making sure that's the one I watch might not be so easy.

I would just say The Shining since, much like NP, I havent seen much of Kubrick's work. FMJ was also not too bad, but like Ive said before, The Boys in Company C beats it as FMJ I see as overrated. The Shining was a daring film for the time as it takes various different styles and is unique. Much like Kubrick's style. As for The Clockwork Orange, I havent seen it.

I guess I'll have to watch both and be the tie-breaker.

The Boys in Company C does not beat Full Metal Jacket. TBiCC is better than FMJ. Both amazingly quotable, brilliant, jaw-dropping, humorous, and interesting, but TBiCC is the prime contendor for best war movie. FMJ is more a quotable movie with lines that make the movie. Not to say it isnt serious, it's plenty serious. But Company C is depicted in a serious tone rather than trying to be funny. While both films have good lines, if anything, Ill award FMJ with the better one liners (I've been known to say "Its one big shit sandwitch, and we all gotta take a bite" a lot). But all in all, the better film is Company C. Did you watch it? What from 3:44 to 6:03 and not laugh. Dare ya.

Not to say it wasn't good, but Full Metal Jacket is a masterpiece. It's a better directed, better acted, and grittier film. While certain parts are funny, in a dark way, the movie also has very stark and shocking violence, and deals with heavier themes. edit: Did not even crack a smile during the clip. R Lee Ermey was so much better.

While certain parts are funny, in a dark way, the movie also has very stark and shocking violence, and deals with heavier themes. I see your point clearly. TBiCC is way darker and grittier, which is why it's better than FMJ. Its more true to the Vietnam war. Too much humor was in FMJ which it what I think people like about it. It wasnt as dark and as grim as TBiCC, but still it's inferior. Both four star films. I like the acting in FMJ, but the characters were way better and more elaborated in Company C. So I would say heres the checklist for both films. The Boys in Company C: Great acting. Believable story. Huge character development. Interesting plots/subplots. Likable characters. The right amount of humor/darkness. Respectable events.Full Metal Jacket: Great acting. Believable story. Huge character development. Interesting plots/subplots. Likable characters. The right amount of humor/darkness. Respectable events.

The balance of humor and horror in Full Metal Jacket is one of the standout elements. There are times when you don't know if you're supposed to laugh or shudder. Also, Kubrick's direction deserves mention. It's gorgeous. The meticulous attention to detail in every frame is stunning. The Boys in Company C doesn't approach the shear polish of Full Metal Jacket.

But Full Metal Jacket has the most really bad-ass Drill Sergeant R.E.Emmery the best D.I. ever in history he makes the movie. So I have to agree with Dirk Full Metal Jacket all the way!
