The couple who take on a real life relationship in Good Dick
Rating: ★★★
Good Dick is an independently made film by first time director Marianna Palka. Palka takes on a very intriguing and likable style as she dives head first into the relationship of a daring man and a reluctant woman. Not only does Good Dick show one of the most realistic and believable relationships, but it also goes to show never to give up on something you want to work very badly. Both actors of the unnamed man and woman show off major skill on camera and both work well with chemistry that is pretty modern in today's society while simultaneously bringing up the moral "past effects the present".
What I especially love about Good Dick is it's originality and stunning silence in some scenes. The silent scenes are some of the best Ive seen as they show an awkward moment between the on screen characters (mainly the woman and man's relationship). It's a creative and interesting aspect I believe few movies have touched on. It also has some cool scenes of the video store the male character was working at which was amusing watch as I am a hardcore movie buff. So the overall scenery and just atmosphere of the movie obtains most of the three star rating.
The film follows the live of a male character (Jason Ritter) who works has a video store clerk who is greeted by a seemingly miserable woman (Marianna Palka) who rents a few videos one night. The man is drawn to this woman and makes a huge effort to try and form a steady relationship with her, but he reluctant behavior and her attitude makes it hard on the two. The man refuses to give up and tries to dig deeper on why she is the way she is and it may uncover some of the woman's past in the process. An intriguing concept used brilliantly here.
Once more, I need to state my great appreciation the man and woman were anonymous in this film because the fact they don't have names makes it so people can maybe fill the shoes with names of the characters or just the mainstream fact they could be anybody. Palka being an actress, writer, producer, and director for this movie had an idea from the start and used it greatly with deep emotion and gratitude here. She's quite a woman of talent.
Good Dick is a cute movie for both Ritter and Palka. I enjoyed just the feeling and taste the film left in my mouth and by the end I wish more had happened. It's time length of only 86 minutes flows by so fast that when it ends you wonder why movies like Dinner for Schmucks can span a over an hour and fifty minutes, but movies like these can rush along in 86 minutes. I dont know about any of you, but I propose a time switch for both films.
Starring: Jason Ritter and Marianna Palka. Directed by: Marianna Palka.
