Since I've seen just about everything I want to this year, I'll share my top 10:
1) Inception: The smartest action movie since The Matrix. Inception is a wonderfully ingenious, character driven, imaginative piece of work. There is so much depth is in this movie it is just staggering.
2) Winter's Bone: Out of all the 2010 films, Winter's Bone had the best performances. Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes are completely invested in their roles and it shows. The supporting cast is incredible too. Everything in this movies just feels right. Like these people were just plucked off the street and put in the film. Granik portrays the Ozarks as an almost apocalyptic setting.
3) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: Scott Pilgrim might not have the deepest, most engaging characters. And it might be a little pandering. But holy hell is it fun.
4) The Social Network: I was disappointed when I found out that David Fincher, the director of my favorite movie ever Fight Club, was going to direct a movie about Facebook. I thought it was a waste of his talent, and just the idea of a Facebook movie was just trying to cash in on a current craze. But then I saw the trailer. The trailer gave me goosebumps. It managed to make the creation of Facebook look like World War 3. I was sold on the movie. After seeing the movie I saw that Fincher knew what he was doing the whole time. It might not be "accurate" but damn is it exciting. Jesse Eisenberg stunned me with his performance.
5) 127 Hours: Claustrophobic thrillers have been all the rage lately, with movies like Buried, Devil, and Frozen. 127 Hours blows all of these movies out of the water, for one reason: it happened. Jason Franco is gripping in this one-man show of a movie. Harrowing, but inspiring, 127 Hours is the tensest movie I've seen in awhile.
6) Toy Story 3: Some of the best characters of the year.
7) The Kids Are All Right: This movie gave me reason to keep loving Julianne Moore. She's great as always in this smart, funny, emotional film.
8) The King's Speech: The Kings Speech relies more on performances that any movie of the year. And with good reason, because everyone in this movie is incredible.
9) Best Worst Movie: A truly fascinating look into the worst movie ever made. I loved seeing the crazy pretentious director and his even crazier wife talk about Troll 2 as if it was a masterpiece.
10) Cyrus: Jonah Hill manages to not be a total unlikable, annoying character in this hilarious movie.
