Greg Giraldo is remembered in his special Give it up for Greg Giraldo.
Rating: ★★★½
One of the most underrated, yet powerful comedians died on September 29, 2010. A man by the name of Greg Giraldo died after being in a coma for five days from a drug overdose. Give it up for Greg Giraldo is the amazing, hour-long special aired in memory for the comedian and his work on various Comedy Central Roast, his special Midlife Vices, and various television pilots.
The special shows rare pilot episodes of numerous shows featuring Giraldo that unfortunately never got picked up by any network. It also shows interviews from people like Jon Stewart, Sarah Silverman, and other comedians. Clips from Roasts and Midlife Vices are also shown.
Sadly, despite fame on Comedy Central Roasts and tour success, Giraldo never got the break he truly deserved. Most TV show pilots he was in never got any recognition and never really got mainstream notice. Giraldo was included on Dave Attell's Insomniac Tour along with Dane Cook and Sean Rouse, but still never got a respectable amount of fame from that.
The special makes it damn clear Giraldo was not only an insult comic, but a situation comic and more. The title "insult comic" obviously came because of his countless appearances on Roasts where a celebrity is lampooned in front of a crowd by other celebrities. Seems fair to put him under that title, yet it's not like thats all he did.
Give it up for Greg Giraldo seems like it came a little late for a memorial special. It's March and he died in late September. Better late than never, but maybe October or November would've been a more fitting time of release. Still, the late release doesn't deteriorate from contents or quality from this exceptionally well done special.
Starring: Greg Giraldo, Jon Stewart, Lewis Black, and Sarah Silverman.
