Angela in The People I've Slept With.
Rating: ★★½
Here's a little off the wall romantic comedy. The People I've Slept With may be different, but it isn't as good or as entertaining as it could've been. It's a little comedy about the touchy subject of promiscuity. Going into this without the slightest clue how it would turn out, I came out actually liking what I saw on screen to an extent. I like the characters, the plot was halfway decent, but the film itself is not really anything too amazing.
The beautiful Karin Anna Cheung plays Angela, an open slut who sleeps around with numerous men without the slightest care. Until she finds out she was pregnant. She acts surprised like this wasn't bound to happen sooner or later. Angela finds comfort with her gay best friend Gabriel (Cruz) who is recovering from a recent breakup with his boyfriend. Angela and Gabriel both look into possible candidates for the father because Angela keeps pictures of people she sleeps with and labels them with one liners like "Nice but boring guy" and "Mr. Hottie."
William Cruz was a pleasure to see on screen because he is the total humor of this movie. This is not a romantic film, but it's almost like a "coming of age" for adults since a person could "come of age" at any point of their life. Angela finally learns that this is a sign to grow up and take responsibility for her actions. She debates on aborting the baby, but then realizes she doesn't want to take the easy way out. Which she shouldn't.
I didn't find myself giving too much sympathy for Angela, or expressing to much liking for her type. I've never liked women that slept around and found nothing wrong with it. It's a disgusting, indecent act and is almost sickening to find out some people don't see the harm in it. At least Angela learns a valuable life lesson and doesn't continue this act of behavior.
The People I've Slept With has a very strong first twenty five minutes but gradually decreases in quality leaving the last sixty minutes feeling drab and with the audience having a "whatever" attitude. After a while, it's inevitable that these characters are meaningless. There is not enough character development for me to express a strong feeling towards these people. I start to not care if she finds the father. It's her mistake.
While the actors are good, the script is passable, and the overall budget was used to it's potential, The People I've Slept With isn't strong in the field of character development or strong enough to keep the audience questioning who is the father. Someone get Maury on the phone. We need to find a baby daddy.
Starring: Karin Anna Cheung, Wilson Cruz, Archie Kao, Lynn Chen, James Shigeta, and Chris Zylka. Directed by: Quentin Lee.
