Saw tenfold.
Saw has a fairly engrossing storyline, a killer with nicely original MO, and it takes the whole deal seriously. Hostel (I've only seen 1, so I might not be getting the whole deal) on the other hand is a fairly straightforward and awfully messy-executed tale of dull pleasure seekers falling prey to sadists' "pleasures," with disappointing results.

Hmm...
They could be interested in the killer's methods They could want to analyze the killer's motives They could be engrossed in the plot They could be curious about how the victims try to escape They could simply be entertained by the action

I have to say The Collector.
Saw doesn't really have a plot. It never scared me either. There dumb mainly. They are mindless gore. Read The Tell-Tale Heart or The Shinning if ya wanna be creeped out.

Read The Tell-Tale Heart or The Shinning if ya wanna be creeped out. wtf?? I can understand it not scaring you but... 1. Mystery killer actually gives ways for his victims to survive because he wants more to appreciate life, 2 men who do not are chained in a bathroom and made to eliminate each other if something drastic does not happen 2. Killer (Actually a cancer patient who went through a mad change to "messianic" serial killer after a suicide attempt) is seemingly held in an inescapable situation by the police, but this is actually part of his plan when it is revealed only he knows where the lead cop's son is (Surrounded in a house full of traps by people who he does not know are actually people wrongfully persecuted by his father). The cop has to somehow get the information out of him, but he's not talking for any reason. 3. Killer who is now on his death bed and being cared for by an increasingly unstable accomplice monitors a father who has to choose between watching his fantasies of revenge on those who let his son's accidental killer go free, or go through physical and emotional hell to save them from horrifying fates. ...They get worse from there but SHIT, those are some of the most thought-provoking horror (Well, thriller) plots this decade; the gore only serves to enhance the psychological element!

Wow city people are pussys you people get fuckin scared of everything. Dilo, I never said Saw was scary, just a lot more interesting than I found Hostel X) . Hostel had some effective moments but it fucked up the atmosphere too much to make a truly scary film. The creepy intro was offset by too much freaky sex later for me to take it seriously, the characters didn't act frightened enough to get a good atmosphere going, the actual capture/horror aspect was over too quickly and then led to a ridiculous and additionally very unsatisfying revenge finale

Excusing the shitty, unnecessary, and hypocritical sequel - Hostel is the clear winner of this little battle. I still hold it accountable for all the things I hate this decade in horror, especially the awful music score (but Saw's is no better), the lack of style (though I get the point of why), and characters who trade in stupid sex comments and are highly unlikable. But, it did have some brains and an actual point to it other than a stupid novelty. Hell, the scene with the American buyer alone is enough to put this so far above Saw, it leaves that piece of shit's head spinning for decades! How could anybody like Saw? Well, I'm only speaking on Briggs' behalf, but... because they are pretentious! I have to say The Collector. Saw doesn't really have a plot. It never scared me either. There dumb mainly. They are mindless gore. Read The Tell-Tale Heart or The Shinning if ya wanna be creeped out. I think you mean: The Shining. "The Shinning" is what they called it on The Simpsons, because as Groundskeeper Willie said: "SSHH! Do you wanna get suuued?!" And The Collector is the most obvious rip-off in the history of cinema! Outside of the porn genre, that is. Don't take this as an attack, because I was kidding before (kinda) in my reply above. But, this is another good example of how you consider ideas more important than the execution of a movie when it comes to something you find effective. You sit there and marvel at how clever it is. That's because you're trying too hard to look beneath the surface when in fact, there is nothing below the surface of Saw but an intense desire to be considered clever. Or to fool people into thinking Saw is a mindgame of the type seen in Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs, two infinitely superior movies that this movie is only able to touch stylistically. Or to be more accurate... lack-of style. Because, of course, the director and writer and fanboy losers who are obsessed with Se7en and the character Hannibal Lecter and want to make a cheap rip-off that in their minds combines the two in perfect harmony. So they work overtime making the world Saw takes place in as cynical as the world of Se7en. What they ended up with was not a cynical and bitter realistic world. Instead, they made a stupid, boring TV-quality portrait of a cynical and bitter world. The kind you see on the David Caruso seasons of C.S.I. - one of the worst crime shows in television history. One that, just like this movie, poorly stereotypes its' characters and doesn't know anything about quality writing. Instead, all of the true focus is in the look. The writing makes people think its' clever in terms of twists and details - but this means nothing without intelligent character writing and working the audience's brains in an endeavor ultimately less shallow. Saw and C.S.I. are fuckin' shallow. And stupid, beyond the details of their traps and the crimes, respectively.

The Collector was meant to be a prequel of Saw. But they turned it into their own movie. Plus I really liked The Collector. I have never seen either Hostels.
