Okay... check it out:
I kind of agree with Dil on this one. I don't think it's a bad movie, and God knows that the music and sound effects are one of the best things about it...
But it is in fact, pretty damn stupid. That's why people love it so much. Because, there's no point to it. Just: freak people out. There's no explanation at all for things like the bearsuit thing/person going down on the Hugh Hefner lookin' dude. And, why is Shelley Duvall such a doormat? Why didn't she go downstairs to the radio when Jack started yelling and swearing at her? Didn't he tell her about the stuff that the guy who hired him told him - about the previous caretaker getting "Cabin Fever" and going crazy because of the isolation. She could have taken this as a warning sign. I mean, she's still stuck there until some kind of help can arrive. So, there's nothing wrong with her being smart and going to the radio to let the rangers know what's going on.
Hell- she should have gone to the radio when she ran to the bar to tell Jack about "the woman in Room 237" and he said he was going up to that room to check. They want her to be a nervous wreck because that's what makes the movie's terror work so well. She's great, though. I might never have bought this on DVD if it weren't for just how great she is in this movie. I really love her strained to the breaking point performance. Especially in the shot of Jack axing down the door where she's so shocked and horrified that all she can do is hide her face in the corner at the wall. And the scene where she drags him to the freezer and can't quite get the locker door opened. The shot cuts from her trying to open it in a slightly wide shot...then to a KILLER closeup of her and her hair sort of dragging in the camera's edges.
There are other reasons why the movie is kind of stupid. Other than how often Jack ends up looking like King Doofus, which he does frequently. Actually, let's talk Jack for a minute. You know that famous sequence where Danny and Wendy are outside playing in the snow and when they cut to the inside, Jack is in the big lounge/desk room staring out the window and the camera is the window looking him in the eyes and he's just standing there in that black sweater? That is not scary. I don't care who argues otherwise. It's just silly. Another scene with him going over the top is when he's talking to Wendy in the same room. She's got the baseball bat and he's like wiggling his tongue and jerking around with his arms and talking in a monkey voice. That was just dumb.
Lots of things in this movie just don't add up. The cook, Dick Halloran is another. The thing that has always left me there with my jaw dropped is how he starts out the movie talking to Danny in that scene about The Shining and him and Danny know there's something dangerous about the Overlook hotel. So, he should know what the hell is going on when he wakes up in the middle of the night and is worried and trying to call the hotel to talk to somebody. He's not getting through and before that, you see him sitting in bed FREAKING OUT with his eyes. He looks scared. But then when he flies to the airport, he talks on the phone to his friend about: the problem is that the folks taking care of the hotel are irresponsible assholes.
Isn't the reason that he's going there that he's worried about them? He knows that there's something dangerous about the place. That's why he tried to call them. But he tells his friend that the problem is the people and not the evil hotel. Then, when he gets there, he just walks around yelling - "HELLO?!" He knows, basically, what happened in Room 237. And Danny knows that he knows, because he said "you scared of Room 237." That means, he knows about the guy going crazy with the ax.
Logic and this film... they're not in the same boat. But it's very effective. Isn't it?
