I'm usually more complex than this. I just think Forrest Gump as a person was an idiot, not a highly intelligent man with a handicap. The fact that they played him as a hero is a joke - a hero knows they are really risking their life but takes the risk anyway. Forrest Gump was just an idiot who did something great. Everything else he did was stupid. Everything. And he's not realistic. He's a character born out of new P.C.-allowed humor and writing. A real drama would be more fair to the audience. This one pandered to the "life affirming" human drama crowd. John Waters' parodied this movie in Cecil B. Demented. I wish I could say brilliantly. But he did kill the movie in one exchange: Kevin Nealon: "Hi, my name's Forrest Gump." Woman on bench: "That's a damn shame!"

it's a great movie, but somewhat overrated. it also didn't deserve to beat out both Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption for best picture

As for Shawshank... overrated is a good place to start. Pulp Fiction... overrated as well, but that I'll give ya. It was born to be overrated. And the fact that it's still a better Fanboy film than anything Eli Roth has made makes me go, okay it is a great movie. And I wouldn't say that about Gump or Shawshank.

Pulp Fiction isn't overrated. It's the most influential movie since Star Wars. Ok, maybe that was hyperbole, but it's still very innovative and iconic. Shawshank is one of my favorite movies. It didn't do anything very original, but it's just so damn good. I can see why they didn't win though, Shawshank was very unknown, and if it won people would've been like wtf is this movie? Pulp Fiction is very graphic and adult, maybe too much. they probably didn't want to give the award for such a dirty movie.

Personality nailed it, Pulp Fiction is very overrated. It was pretty good though the glory is undeserving much like The Dark Knight.

I have no personal love for Star Wars whatsoever. Shawshank Redemption was a moving film for me when I was like - 14. Now, I'm an adult and prison movies are not as intriguing and dramatic as they are lurid and maybe a little sleazy, manipulative, distracting (the full nudity from beefy Edward Norton was a little titilating instead of horrifying in American History X). And that's just because I don't want to be the first person to say Shawshank's portrayal of gay prisoners might be a little short-sighted and completely unrealistic. Not to mention lines like "fought the good fight" in context of being raped in prison are unintentionally stupid. Pulp Fiction is ... a teeny bit overrated. Because it's a Movie-Movie. Not a real drama or comedy or thriller or action film. It's a Movie about Movies. Everything in that movie is taken from other sources. For a Quentin Tarantino film, it's perfect. If you're a director's guy (which I am in the case of Argento- certainly, but there are so very few Argento's it's not funny). I'm usually a genre guy. And so, I had to see Jackie Brown and Four Rooms before I realized Pulp Fiction was as good as it was. Good for me, but that's not the way it should have to be. A film should do its' genre proud and stand on its' own. You should be able to tell how good a film is based on its' own merits, not by how original the filmmaker is.

Shawshank- i'll admit the fact that since Boggs (is that his name, i'm not sure) dies and Andy no longer gets raped is a little improbable. Other than that I still find the movie emotional and near perfect. It's very well acted, you at least have to admit that.
Pulp Fiction- It doesn't do it's genre proud because it doesn't have a genre. It's kind of it's own thing that has been copied and imitated, but never as good. It stands on it's own as a funny, dark, violent crime thriller. Getting all the references Tarantino throws in just adds to it, like all his movies.
I'll admit Shawshank is somewhat overrated (still one of my favorite movies.) Pulp Fiction was maybe getting too much praise when it came out, but now it's not overrated. In fact, many people may have forgotten all the innovations in the movie that are common now.

Other than that I still find the movie emotional and near perfect. It's very well acted, you at least have to admit that. The HELL I DO... Just kidding (I kinda want to punch someone right now... kinda because I don't need to sweat in anymore places than I am already and with this humidity, if I do anything even remotely more physical than sitting- I can count on that becoming a reality / no, I'm not in the best of moods now but getting more playful). You're very right- I do. But that's never something I've been overly impressed by. I have room in me for love or appreciation for maybe one drama of each variety (prison movie, black oppression movie, war epic) and if I allow myself to be swayed by acting quality, I become a whole other person. Pulp Fiction- It doesn't do it's genre proud because it doesn't have a genre. It's kind of it's own thing that has been copied and imitated, but never as good. It stands on it's own as a funny, dark, violent crime thriller. It's not really a thriller- the thrill scenes are driven by a comic edge. I mean- come on... listen to the music at the most over-the-top intense moments, it's like a joke on John Waters who was the Quentin Tarantino of the 70's and also did the "let's find the most outrageous underground classic pop song to play with this bizarre set-piece" thing. At least Jackie Brown had a genre. I appreciate what Pulp Fiction is doing, but it's in another realm now. Where it's all about the fans and not the movie. And how "man's man" the thing has sort of become.
