What are you 10 favorite albums of all time. Try to limit it to one band/artist for each. NO "BEST OF" COMPILATIONS ALLOWED. Film soundtracks are allowed. Live albums are not allowed. Strictly studio albums.
Favorite album from my favorite band. So you know, do the math. Kim is such an amazing singer, and Kelley provides some great backing vocals. As a bassist, this is my dream. The bass in a song like Glorious is so pronounced and sounds great.
FACT: David Bowie is the best person to ever live. The way he innovated, experimented, and changed his music is incredible. Every album is different. For my money, Ziggy Stardust is his best work. An eclectic cast of some of the best rock songs ever written.
It was damn near impossible to choose between this and Surfer Rosa. Both are masterpieces with some of the best songs ever written on them, but I went with Doolittle because I've listened to it a whole lot more. The musical creativity and sheer imagination of the Pixies is insane. Frank Black is truly a genius. Songs like Hey, Here Comes Your Man, and La La Love You show the originality and overall quality of this band very well. The songs can be funny and abrasive. Happy and sad. Dark and cheery.
Picking a favorite Talking Heads album was a lot like picking a favorite child. I love them all near and dear, but in the end I went with Talking Heads: 77. Psycho Killer is one of the best songs ever written. Talking Heads' funky blend of pop and rock makes them stand out. Their smart lyrics raise them up from being another pop/rock band with a catchy tune. David Byrne's original, distinct vocals ensure there is no other band like Talking Heads.
The Beatles are alright I guess. They have some okay songs.
THE BEATLES ARE SO FUCKING GOOD. As cliche as it is to say, The Beatles are the best band of all time. My personal favorite album is Magical Mystery Tour. I Am The Walrus, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields Forever, Hello Goodbye, these are the types of songs that would be the highlights of a single band, not a single band's album. The songs go from normal and slowly digress to craziness. I love it. It avoids the formulaic nature of some of the band's previous albums.
In the crowded, competitive genre of punk, with the likes of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys stand out in my mind as the best punk rock band of all time. The embody everything punk: fast, angry guitar riffs, heavy bass lines, and a "fuck you" attitude to everything. The Dead Kennedys are more than just a pack of angry outcasts, Jello Biafra injects the songs with a level of political satire and commentary that elevates the band over the rest.
Californication is a decidedly more slow paced endeavor for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The titular song Californication is my favorite RHCP song of all time.
