"Awkward... I think the reason I confused them was because (1) it was late and (2) I just heard some will.i.am song on the TV. That's the only explanation. That, or I'm just an idiot."
No worries. Back when I first started listening to them I would start out with "The Black Eyed..." and quickly go back to the proper name.
"Honestly, I like this thread, but we need NP or someone else to come in. This between you and me is getting not only repetitive, but just tiresome because it's always the same."
Yes. He's been posting much more lately I'd love to see him return to this thread he started. Hawk was the other big music guy on the site. He's gone for the time being at least. I don't how much Jib and Pat listen to music, but I'd love to see them get in on this.
"You pick a song, I review it between mediocre - good, I pick a song, you trash the hell out of it, etc. It's not that I want you to lie, hell no, but I feel like I can't win here. I try to pick a song from another genre, and I still get bashed."
This... is less okay. I haven't hated all of your songs. I don't want to tell you how to run things. If you were expecting me to love the song you picked this week just because it was a rap song, it was an ill advised decision. While I certainly like several rap groups/artists, it's not a genre a consistently like, especially stuff from the 2000's. Just go with what you want, like I do. If I don't like it, who cares? I'm always interested in seeing what bands you choose.

It's that time again!
Song: This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) Band: Talking Heads Album: Speaking in Tongues
Decided to post the live version from Stop Making Sense as well because it's much better than the studio version. The Talking Heads would often tow the line between rock music and pop music, with occasional dives into African beats. This Must Be the Place tied all three of these things into one package. While there may be individual songs that do these separate genres better, none blend them as well as This Must Be the Place.

I went ahead with the studio version. I'm not a fan of hearing anything live. I just don't like it. The audience is loud, the feel isn't the same, and there usually isn't anything special done to the live version that makes it stand out. It's like 3D - great to some, an annoyance to others.
Rating: 4/5 stars.
I can't lie - I love the beat of this song to death. The intro I played about three times because that beat was so catchy. The vocals are very easy, and it's just an all and all, feel good, soft song. It's relaxing and it's involving because its lyrics are so soft-spoken and beautifully sung. It reminds me of something they'd play on San Andreas on the station K-DST. It's not pop at all - it's classic rock drifting into a folk rock type of song. Easy on the ears and comfortable on the soul. Party on, man!
My song of the week:
Song: Carry on My Wayward Son Artist: Kansas Album: Leftoverture
Just an all out great song. If I had one complaint, it would be the fact the majority of this song is instrumentals. I have no problem, but this is the kind of song that could be filled with well-sung, enjoyable, and amazing vocals. Sometimes I fast-forward a minute and a quarter just to hear the lyrics. Still, this is just a great song.

5 FREAKIN' STARS. I'm not just saying that to make you feel better about your tastes. That is a great song.
Live versions usually are kinda bad. Often I'll listen to them for variety, but most the time they're too fast, and even worse when they change the lyrics up. But all the live versions off of "Stop Making Sense" have great energy.

There's no other reason to listen to them except for variety or curiousity. They speed the song up, the audience feel the need to participate (save the participation for your antici...pation for Rocky Horror), and, like you said, they change up lyrics. Just not needed.

It's just sometimes the studio versions seem sterile in comparison to live versions. Every song off of Stop Making Sense has much more energy than their studio counterparts. There are also times were the first time I hear a song it might be the live version and that'll be the only way to hear it. Like Gigantic by the Pixies this version in particular is the only version I will listen to: Also, I basically prefer any Flight of the Conchords live/show version to studio stuff. That's one where I want laughter since those guys are basically comedians, but they're also great lyricists so it's sometimes nice to get an isolated sound. Also, the show versions of those songs were my first exposure to those songs so there's some nostalgia at work.

Song: Starman Artist: David Bowie Album: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Picking a David Bowie song has so far been the hardest thing I have ever had to do. The owned the 70's in music. No one could touch him. He had the songs. He had the style. He had the originality, experimentation, performances, personality, and talent to top everything else out there. Ziggy Stardust, Station to Station, The Berlin Trilogy, and everything in between.
Starman was the song that made me the David Bowie fan I am today. It turned Bowie from "The guy that wrote Space Oddity and wore funny clothes" to "The greatest single performer in the history of music."

I'll try and get to this tomorrow or Wednesday. I'm nothing but rushed this week because school resumes Wednesday, I need to finish reviews for "The Summer Diaries," and I can no longer stay up till Midnight on my computer because I'm trying to get into the school habit of going to bed at 9pm. I'm going to listen to this, though. Promise you.

With the school starting I'll forgive Steve for missing this week and won't post another song.
However, there is no excuse for No Personality.

Just did. Exceptionally well-done. The beat is great, the lyrics are wonderful, and the overall vibe is pleasing. David Bowie is an artist I really need to pay more attention to. I don't hate it, I'm just not familar with him all that much. Still - I love "Rebel Rebel," but this blows it out of the water.

Alright, let's just say Starman was a wash. I'm glad you liked it, but let's try to keep on a schedule. I may start doing these on Sundays.
Song: Veridis Quo Artist: Daft Punk Album: Discovery
Maybe it dates back to our animal roots, but Daft Punk never ceases to make me move and dance. Slap whatever label you want to on it, techno, house, trance, electronic, because the truth is that Daft Punk stands alone. The two French robots started something that can imitated, but never duplicated.
