Not surprised you hate Full House. The show is cliche, sometimes pointless, and sometimes even makes a big problem cured in an instant. Though I like it, its amusing, and I do like the cast relationship. Its a good show to me. Bring on the hate, NP.

Thanks - now I'm laughing at it too. The best example of how cult-like the show is is in the "very special episode" where Jesse is embarrassed that he didn't graduate high school. That's what inspired me to write this / re-watch the "Shape Up" episode.

A little of both to be honest. It may not be the best family show out there, but its damn well close in my opinion (I'll give you a minute to laugh). It really was successful and it handled problems in a cliche and probably the simplest of ways, but its a feel good show, ensemble cast, I love Stamos/Loughlin/Cameron/Saget/and Dave Coulier. Plus I remember coming home after school on half days, rushing home to catch the second episode (it ran on a one hour block and on half days Id get off about 11 am and I get home about 11:25 am just in time to make the second show). I also love the show's theme song, Ive known the words since I was five and its just classic.
For what it isn't though, is a different story. Most shows nowadays (24, Supernatural, etc) are problematic, very serious, and theres hardly anymore feel cool classic sitcom shows like this. When I think of good sitcoms I think of this, Roseanne (which I started watching in January and really like), Family Matters, and a few others. It's not very problematic (very few episodes are depressing), the show has nice vibes, fine lessons, and you can chill out to it.
Bring on the hate.
Also, to be fair, I don't like the episode "Shape Up" too much either. I'd give that like a one and a half. It's a bad episode. The one you're thinking of with Jesse wanting to go back to school is "Subterranean Graduation Blues" (S6, E19).

Modern Family follows the sitcom pattern to a certain extent, with a warm fuzzy lesson at the end. It's just way way funnier than any sitcom you mentioned Steve. It's got an ensemble cast and a feel good vibe, mixed with hilarity.
Shows are more serious now because that's what people want to see, including me. More serious shows move me more emotionally that an episode of Full House of Step By Step. Those shows may have their nostalgic charms for those who watched them as a child, but if you look at them, they're really not good.

Steve, I don't laugh at you or mock you just because we don't always agree. I save that for the people who deserve it. Like people with smaller minds or people who take what I say too personally. Just because I won't say anything nice about The Matrix, for example, does not mean I thought Tyler was a dipshit or beneath me or anything. But remember Dr. Blood? We disagreed on one movie and then he flew off the handle and started trashing - in the same discussion - me for liking Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I never got that personal when talking to Briggs or Tyler. You can't take me personally. I may eviscerate a few bad movies or shows but we all know I'm not a God or anything, we're all people just the same only with different backgrounds. So, we know that none of us can stop anyone from liking something. In fact, I don't even think you see what I'm talking about in regard to this show. Which means your enjoyment will only change if you want it to. I have no power over anyone (unless they start disrespecting me like Petts did, isn't it funny how both he and Dil had the same compulsion for animated GIFs?). So remember that. To quote a rockstar I very much admire, "don't you let my letter get you down." You can like anything for any reason you want to. Look at nostalgia, for example. I go psycho for those old HBO commercials from the 80's and 90's (I found a BUNCH on YouTube the other day and I almost cried). I think a lot of people would think that's psycho. And my strange DVD chapter fixation. It's an outright obsession. There's no accounting for taste. When you grow up, things change in your mind. At first, it's clarity. You get more sophisticated. That can last or fade, depending on the person. But you think right now that your mind is made up on some things? It will change. Some things you liked will become things you like a lot less. You'll see flaws. They don't even have to be serious flaws. But for example, I never had anything inside me but extreme love for the movie The Trouble with Angels. The Hailey Mills movie from the 60's about her and her friend making trouble in a religious school. It was always just good hearted, non-manipulative fun. Plain and simple. It always made me feel good. My roommate got the DVD and I had to re-watch it. Let me tell you, in just 4 years since my last viewing of it, I saw SO MANY problems with it- your head would spin. I can never watch that movie the same way again. It's not just fun anymore. There are other examples, but I think you get my point. You never know how you're going to change but just a few short years can change the whole way you look at the world. Including your own past and the things you used to love. The humor was almost always taken from something serious. The early seasons (only at times) and the final two (almost all the time) got a little slap-happy, but each season had at least 3 episodes you could count on trying to punch you right in the gut. |

It was a damn well said sometimes creepy show, but some parts were funny. It was a unique show. |
